What is the NEC 120% Rule?

National Electrical Code (NEC) Section 705.12(B) protects electrical panels from busbar thermal overload. When solar power feeds in from the opposite end of the main breaker, the busbar can carry up to 120% of its rated current because electrical loads draw power along the busbar between the two sources.

What is Main Breaker Derating?

If your panel does not have enough headroom for a larger solar system, an electrician can often downsize the main service breaker (for example, replacing a 200 A main breaker with a 175 A breaker in a 200 A panel). This instantly unlocks 25 A of additional solar backfeed headroom without replacing the panel chassis.

Branch Circuit 80% Continuous Rule

Under NEC 210.19, solar generation operating continuously for 3 hours or more cannot exceed 80% of the branch circuit breaker rating. A standard 15 A convenience receptacle allows up to 12 A (1,440 W) continuous generation, while a 20 A branch allows up to 16 A (1,920 W).
